Fetal aging via ultrasound exam improves accuracy significantly.

Aging is employed in many situations; it can be done to delineate AI from bull-bred pregnancies, to separate animals into calving groups and monitor for dystocias, and to maximize nutritional efficiency throughout the stages of pregnancy, to name a few.

Treating lameness in cows

Early treatment of lameness limits deterioration and reduces recovery time. Regular hoof trimming can help reduce lameness, as overgrown claws are more likely to result in lameness.

Vaccination and liver biopsy.

Liver biopsies are the most accurate way to determine copper storage levels with 6 – 7 liver samples collected from a herd, representing older and younger animals in the herd.

Lameness has a far-reaching impact on both production and reproduction, prevention is key.

Prolonged exposure to wet areas, especially when track surface is hard, will lead to softening of hooves, which makes them more prone to footrot and puncture lesions. Cows dislike walking on a sideways gradient of more than 10%. This can cause congestion and increased pressure which can lead to lameness.

Blood samples  used for  testing for disease and copper and selenium levels.

Copper and selenium levels are at their lowest pasture levels in late winter and spring. Low copper is directly linked to infertility, and low selenium is linked with retained fetal membranes, and poor immune system defences, which contribute to poor herd fertility.
